CoLinux for Ubuntu
To install from scratch, follow instructions for installing Debian Sid here
Now upgrade Debian Sid to Ubuntu Hoary
- Edit /etc/apt/sources.list, comment out Debian references, insert Hoary ones
- apt-get update
- apt-get dist-upgrade
Alternatively, if you already have Ubuntu installed on a separate partition, then you can follow the the instructions for running a dual-boot CoLinux setup

Please forgive me if I’m being too stupid, but I’m a total newbie on Linux.
I have already installed an Ubuntu Hoary distro using dual boot… does this mean I have to reinstall *again* ? I just want to use colinux to run the ubuntu that resides on my other partition.

“total newbie on Linux” and you’re trying out coLinux? congratulations, you’re a brave man
anyway, the answer is “no you don’t have to reinstall”. Follow the link I’ve added above, it’s from the CoLinux FAQ and explains how to setup your config.xml to use your existing installation. Works fine for me…

Hi Rachel,
I am fairly new to Debian (I am used to other Distros and unix flavours). My question is why is changing to the unstable Sid source step required?
Could you not change the soruces to hoary and just update from that?

Do you know if it is possible to use colinux+mythtv+a hauppage pvr350?
I’m trying to make a colinux setup using gentoo and i want it to access my hauppage 350 with mythtv

I’m afraid I don’t know. Gentoo+MythTV+PVR-350 works just fine, I’ve used that myself. But under colinux? Best suggestion I can offer is, get it working under a dual-boot Gentoo/Windows scenario and then try it under colinx using the dual-boot strategy

colinux cannot access hardware directly (making all linux kernel drivers not usable) as Windows is supposed to have control of all hardware.

Hi,
Have you managed to do a fresh install with Ubuntu? (i.e. on an empty “partition” without having to upgrade debian)
Thanks,

This is definitely a fortuitous find for me, as I’m looking to get Kubuntu installed on coLinux, and then I’m going to attempt making a single installer which would be able to install coLinux, the network driver, and the Kubuntu image, just because I have a lot of friends who would like to use coLinux, are afraid of the command prompt, and to be honest, aren’t technical enough to be comfortable running multiple installers…
this little tip for getting Ubuntu installed is a god-send for me, as I was wondering how I’d get it to happen
thanks for the guidance
